Senior Laboratory Animal Technician

Salary:

 $13.14/hour

Basic Function:

Provides general care for laboratory animals; observes animals and assists with animal programs. Provides guidance and training on performance of duties to classified and student employees. Reports to Manager, Laboratory Animal Resources or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Provides the following responsibilities to classified and student employees assisting with animal laboratory care:

  • Provides functional guidance on performance of duties in absence of manager/supervisor.
  • Trains new employees on animal laboratory care and procedures.
  • Assists with the prioritization of responsibilities.
  • Provides input on employee performance evaluations.

Provides general animal care (e.g., provides food and water to animals, maintains animal housing rooms); maintains housing systems and equipment (e.g., cleans, sterilizes, disinfects, etc.).

Observes animals; compiles, records, and reports data on assigned animals.

Organizes breeding colonies.

Assists Manager, Laboratory Animal Resources, attending veterinarian, and researchers with animal programs; restrains animals; administers medication and collects specimens.

Communicates with manger, veterinarian, principal investigators, and other laboratory personnel regarding animal welfare.

Manages, oversees, and instructs on use of advanced caging systems including ventilated caging systems. Maintains inventory and related records; receives animals.

Prepares animals and equipment for surgery; euthanizes laboratory animals, when requested.

May serve on committees and attend meetings.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of three years of experience working in a laboratory or in an animal care environment.

License/Certification:

Valid Ohio driver's license may be required.

Knowledge Of:

Nutrition
Animal biology
Governmental policies and regulations concerning animal care
Sanitation
Safety practices

Skill In:

Operating cleaning and sterilizing equipment
Operation of restraint devices

Ability To:

Understand basic program of animal care Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 75 pounds
Read, write and accurately follow oral and written instructions
Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to Calculate percentages)
Manage time effectively, and set priorities
Operate a computer
Provide direction and guidance to employees

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Five years of experience in a laboratory animal facility preferred. Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) and RVT license preferred.

Asterisk (*) indicates knowledge, skills, abilities which may require assessments. Assessments could take the form of interview questions, a request to provide work samples or a written or practical test to assess job related competencies.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Animal lab environment; exposed to cleaning solutions, animal odors, potential animal bites and diseases, wastes, etc.; requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting up to 50 pounds (e.g., animals, cages), occasional lifting up to 75 pounds (e.g., bags of feed), bending, and extended periods of walking and standing; may work varied hours to include weekends and holidays.
