Basic Function:

 Responsibility for the design, implementation, and stewardship of research development models supporting Kent State as an R1 research university. Oversees the Office of Research Development and has direct working relationships with faculty in their pursuit of extramural research funding, specifically for large interdisciplinary proposals, Center proposals, and research and training proposals of high institutional importance. Works with constituents across and outside of the university to raise the university’s research profile, advance research success and build new research collaborations in line with other divisional efforts that maintain and support a growing R1 university. Reports to Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Design multi-year research development strategies that align with the institution’s strategic plan for research,  leverages funding priorities at the state and federal level, facilitates greater corporate/industry funding, and improves existing resources at the university. 

Elevate Kent State University’s profile with key funders at federal and state agencies. 

Catalyze and facilitate new cross-disciplinary research initiatives, and find synergies to facilitate development of large, complex research grant applications in response to funding opportunities (federal and non-federal), identified by faculty or the Division of Research and Sponsored Programs, that capitalize on existing strengths and expertise.

Provide direct supervision to university personnel which may include unclassified, classified, or student employees. 

Engage external constituencies (e.g. political, industry, regional, community stakeholders) related to research initiatives to raise the research profile of Kent State University and facilitate new collaborations. 

Collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization to identify areas of institutional research priorities and to ensure an increase in successful submissions. Coordinate with unit-level research development staff and leadership, e.g., Associate Deans for Research, to effectively maximize and leverage resources across the university to promote collaboration. 

Develop policies to advance the institution’s research mission, strategy, expectations, and procedures / processes. 

Oversee the development of faculty enrichment and graduate student programming to increase success in grantsmanship through workshops and education, providing structures and opportunities for consultation and feedback during the grant writing process.  

Exercise fiscal oversight and planning for departmental functions, activities and needs. 

Participate in relevant institutional committees and working groups.  

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree required. Five years of experience working with faculty in an academic or research setting.

License/Certification:

 

Knowledge Of:

Award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, and cooperative agreements *
Generally accepted accounting, fiscal and reporting principles
Current compliance regulations in all areas of research administration

Skill In:

Written, verbal and interpersonal communication with the ability to communicate effectively with all components of the university (faculty, staff and students) and external constituents *
Interpersonal, organizational, supervisory, and analytical functions
Financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reporting leveraging spreadsheet and database software

Ability To:

Manage high volume and complex transactions
Manage and direct staff
Monitor and maintain budget
Ensure adherence to all policies and procedures of university
Work with confidential information on a daily basis
Lead committees as appropriate
Maintain independent judgment; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
Previous supervisory experience.
Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
