Basic Function:

To provide academic and administrative leadership for an academic school.

The College of the Arts at Kent State University invites applicants for the position of Director of the School of Theatre and Dance, to begin July 1, 2022. The ideal candidate for this full-time administrative appointment will be a visionary leader possessing versatility, energy, and collegiality, while demonstrating enthusiasm for advancing the mission of this nationally recognized School.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Develop, update, implement, and coordinate teaching, research, and service missions of the school.

Oversee budgetary, personnel, and program activities of the school; coordinate faculty promotion, tenure, and reappointment reviews and make recommendations to College Dean.

Oversee development, implementation, and revision of new and existing academic programs; oversee curriculum development; coordinate faculty workloads; develop course schedule.

Represent and promote school within the University and external community.

Oversee student advising; may advise graduate and undergraduate students.

May oversee internship, scholarship, or grant programs.

May serve as building curator.

Serve on department, division, and University committees.

Provide leadership and oversight of a large/complex department (e.g., department with multiple units).

Perform related duties as assigned.

Coordinate and guide the teaching, research, and service missions of the School; oversee budget (in a responsibility centered management environment), personnel, and program activities; coordinate faculty reappointment, promotion, and tenure reviews; supervise School staff; guide the development, implementation, and revision of new and existing academic programs; coordinate faculty workloads and academic course schedules; represent and promote the School within the University and to external communities; supervise student success initiatives through advising, recruitment, internship, scholarship and grant programs; serve on college and university committees, and as a liaison for School advisory boards; coordinate all committee activities within the School ; oversee the operations of Porthouse Theatre,  the professional summer theatre located near the Kent State campus with a 3000+ subscription base and fifteen week annual production season.

Minimum Qualifications:

Terminal degree in one of the disciplines of the school and experience generally commensurate to the rank of full professor.


Significant academic or equivalent professional experience generally commensurate to the rank of full professor.



Knowledge Of:

Academic programs; budgeting; personnel matters to include faculty relations and university governance; personal computer applications

Skill In:

Written and interpersonal communication

Ability To:

Provide leadership and direction; analyze situations and develop effective solutions

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Qualifications should be commensurate to be appointed at the rank of full professor within the school.

Senior scholar with qualifications to support an appointment at the rank of professor in a discipline within the School of Theatre and Dance; strong record of administrative experience, including successful fiscal management; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and the support of research/creative activity; terminal degree in a discipline represented in the School, or significant academic or equivalent professional experience generally commensurate to the rank of full professor; evidence of potential success as a fund raiser and community liaison; demonstrated focus on collaboration, interdisciplinary work, and curricular innovation and development; clear commitment to building and supporting a diverse and inclusive community.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
