Basic Function:

The May 4 Archivist plays an important role in the University’s commitment to ensuring the long-term preservation of and access to historically significant materials regarding the Kent State Shootings (May 4).

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Collection development goals include actively seeking the records of individuals and groups that have been historically under-represented in the archival record and materials that capture the legacy of May 4 in the areas of social justice and peace and conflict studies. The May 4 Archivist is directly responsible for the unit’s operations and programs relating to records, papers, books, and other materials reflecting the 1970 Kent State Shootings and their aftermath. Operational responsibilities include, but are not limited to: acquiring, appraising, accessioning, processing, preserving, and providing effective access to historically significant materials, in all formats, that are directly related to the topics outlined above. The position also participates in instruction, public services, and development of collections that document the Kent State Shootings and their aftermath. The position actively participates in outreach programs related to May 4 collections including management of the Kent State Shootings Oral History Project, digitization of selected materials, curation of exhibitions, and creation of social media content.

 

  1. In coordination with the Head of Special Collections and Archives, acquires, appraises, and accessions records, papers, books, and other materials in all formats and from all sources (both affiliated and non-affiliated) regarding May 4.

 

  1. Processes and preserves May 4 materials in all formats and supervises this work by others in the unit, such as student employees.

 

  1. Works cooperatively with the University Archivist on acquisition, appraisal, and accessioning of materials that are both related to May 4, but are also University historical records (i.e., those created and collected by University staff, offices, and organizations).

 

  1. Provides class sessions, tours, and other instructional programs related to May 4.

 

  1. Provides reference and research assistance related to May 4 collections and participates in reference services on the public service desk on a regular basis.

 

  1. Manages the Kent State Shootings Oral History Project.

 

  1. Actively participates in digitization projects, social media, and other outreach programs related to May 4 collections.

 

  1. Serves on appropriate University Libraries and Kent State University committees, task forces, and other groups to ensure objectives are effectively met.

 

  1. Maintains a thorough understanding and awareness of library systems, policies, and procedures.

 

  1. Maintains a collegial and constructive environment based upon open communication and the fostering of good working relationships among all staff.

 

  1. Embodies the highest professional standards.

 

  1. Participates in other activities as assigned.

Additional Examples of Duties – if applicable:

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MLS, MLIS, or MS from an ALA-accredited program of library and/or information science.
  • Two years of prior professional work experience in special collections/archives in an academic library setting.
  • Familiarity with archival theory, practice, and standards.
  • Experience providing reference services in a special collections/archives setting.
  • Experience with processing archival collections and creating finding aids. 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to completion of detailed operational responsibilities on a daily basis.

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

  • Formal training in archives and special collections librarianship, academic librarianship, and/or digital archives.
  • Experience in collection appraisal and management functions.
  • Experience in digitization of archival materials.
  • Experience with oral history projects.
  • Supervisory experience. 
  • Experience in goal setting, development, and execution of projects.
  • Familiarity with legal aspects of archival administration.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
