Basic Function:

 

The Data Librarian provides comprehensive data services in support of the University’s teaching, learning, and research needs.  The Data Librarian leads the data management initiatives of University Libraries and works collaboratively with other units to define and meet the University’s research data needs. Manages daily operations and functions of the Map Library, and supports the teaching and research programs of the departments of Geography and Geology. As needed, will also provide support for the University’s interdisciplinary institutes and non-academic units.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

  1. Works collaboratively with University partners to analyze and assess the research data needs of the University community.  Plans for the Libraries to provide and sustain research data services that align with larger University-level initiatives.  Evaluates and adapts UL’s service offerings to continuously meet evolving research data needs.
  2. Designs and provides specialized instruction and research support for faculty, researchers, and students in the discovery and use of data, data literacy, and data visualization.  Assists researchers with the review of data management plans and other grant-related requests.
  3. Partners with other subject librarians to support data-intensive courses, assignments, and research projects across the University.
  4. Plans, implements, and evaluates the programming and services of the Map Library, annually and longer-term.  Manages the Map Library’s Map It! geospatial data visualization service.  Provides user support for Esri ArcGIS products.
  5. Manages the daily operations of the Map Library, including shelving, circulation, facilities, reserves, and equipment. Includes hiring, training, and evaluating staff and student assistants, as well as establishing and monitoring the Map Library’s student budget allocation.
  6. Manages the collection for the Map Library, selecting new resources and de-acquisitioning older materials as needed for space or programmatic reasons.
  7. Provides research and instructional support to students, faculty and staff in assigned subject disciplines, through multiple methods including email, in-person appointments, and serving as an embedded asset in online and traditional courses.
  8. Teaches the information literacy skills necessary for the effective use of resources specific to assigned subject disciplines through in-person instructional sessions and via asynchronous offerings such as online tutorials.
  9. Provides extensive outreach to promote library research and instructional services and collections to inform potential users of their availability and usefulness. 
  10. Identifies and helps to evaluate needed resources and services to support assigned subject disciplines.
  11. Participates in the provision of orientation and instructional sessions, such as tours, workshops, etc. for target departments, and to the larger university community as needed.
  12. Works in departmental and University Libraries’ working groups to ensure objectives are effectively met.
  13. Maintains a thorough understanding and awareness of University Libraries systems, policies, and procedures.
  14. Maintains a collegial and constructive environment based upon open communication and the fostering of good working relationships among all faculty and staff.
  15. Embodies the highest professional standards. Upgrades professional and technical skills as needed.
  16. Demonstrates the ability to satisfy the requirements for tenure track faculty reappointment, tenure and promotion
  17. Participates in other activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

 
  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or other relevant graduate degree as deemed appropriate by the Libraries
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data management practices and issues
  • Understanding of the research life-cycle as demonstrated by education or work experience
  • Experience with databases, software, and tools used for geospatial data analysis or mapping
  • Potential to satisfy the requirements for tenure track faculty reappointment, tenure, and promotion
  • Ability to adapt to technological and/or organizational change
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Track record of ability to work collaboratively

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

  • Experience with or demonstrated potential for supporting researchers with data services
  • Advanced degree in an appropriate discipline
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS, or other software/tools used for geospatial data analysis or mapping, such as Google Earth, QGIS
  • Familiarity with other software used for data visualization (such as Tableau) or statistical analysis (such as R or SPSS) or qualitative data analysis (such as NVivo, Atlas.ti, or Dedoose)
  • Record of scholarship
  • Experience an academic or specialized library, preferably in a public services role
  • Teaching experience, preferably using multiple modes of instruction
  • Familiarity working with data management requirements of funding agencies, such as NSF, NEH, NIH
  • Demonstrated understanding of the value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
