Laboratory Animal Technician - Intermittent

Provides general care for laboratory animals; observes animals and assists with animal programs. Reports to Manager, Laboratory Animal Resources or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:
Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Provides general animal care (e.g., provides food and water to animals, maintains animal housing rooms); maintains housing systems and equipment (e.g., cleans, sterilizes, disinfects, etc.).Observes animals; compiles, records, and reports data on assigned animals. Organizes breeding colonies.Assists Manager, Laboratory Animal Resources, attending veterinarian, and researchers with animal programs; restrains animals; administers medication and collects specimens.Maintains inventory and related records; receives animals.Prepares animals and equipment for surgery; euthanizes laboratory animals, when requested.May serve on committees and attend meetings.May function as a lead worker over Laboratory Animal Aides and/or student employees assisting with animal care.Performs related duties as required.
Additional Examples of Duties – if applicable:
High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of six months of experience working in a laboratory or in an animal care environment. One year of experience in a laboratory animal facility preferred.
Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) preferred.Valid Ohio driver's license may be required.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Animal lab environment; exposed to cleaning solutions, animal odors, potential animal bites and diseases, wastes, etc.; requires moderate physical effort to include frequent lifting up to 50 pounds (e.g., animals, cages), occasional lifting up to 75 pounds (e.g., bags of feed), bending, and extended periods of walking and standing; may work varied hours to include weekends and holidays.
