The purpose of this hire is to 1) build upon the department’s existing strengths which include, but is not limited to Community Activism and Organizing, Gender, Race and Sex, Government and Social Systems and a vibrant Arts and Culture concentration and 2) to further develop the department’s expertise and scholarly leadership in matters of global importance. The department includes the Institute of African-American Affairs, the Center of Pan-African Culture, the African Community Theatre and the Uumbaji Gallery, all of which offer opportunities for national and international collaboration, community engagement, research and mentoring/professional development.
We seek applicants whose primary area of expertise lies in the area of colonialism and its legacies [systems of governance of formerly enslaved and oppressed populations in Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean, including Indigenous Peoples]. The department is particularly interested in candidates who utilize decolonizing/indigenous research methodologies and pedagogies as well as those who may have expertise in one or more of these fields: Gender Studies, Communication Studies, Cultural Studies, Public Policy, International Relations, Legal Studies. We are particularly interested in applicants whose orientation to teaching and research correspond with our commitment to centering Pan-African and Indigenous thought and practices.
A Ph.D. is required, with preference for that degree being in Africana Studies, African-American Studies or related field.
Associate or Full Professor level applicants must demonstrate a well-developed and vibrant research program, a strong publication record, extramural funding success, and evidence of teaching excellence at the undergraduate levels. Assistant level applicants must demonstrate the ability to develop strong research, publication and teaching records
