Basic Function:

Provides support to computer users in a computer lab; assists in coordinating the use, maintenance and security of a computer lab. Reports to designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Assists staff, faculty and students in hardware and software capabilities and use of micro and mainframe computers.

Assists in coordinating the use and security of hardware and software in a computer lab.

Assists with workshops; develops user manuals and reference aids.

Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots microcomputers and peripheral equipment.

Maintains and troubleshoots Local Area Networks.

Installs software and makes revisions to software as required.

Maintains backups and restores system disks and files.

Evaluates hardware and software for possible purchase.

Maintains inventory and supplies.

May supervise, train, and direct the work activities of student or temporary employees; may participate in the training of new employees.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or equivalent plus course work in Computer Technology (or equivalent training or experience which provides comparable knowledge, skills or abilities). A minimum of one year of experience in utilizing a variety of software packages.

License/Certification:

 

Knowledge Of:

Disk operating system; knowledge of specific disk operating system may be preferred
Mainframe operating system (e.g., VAX), if required by position

Skill In:

Interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to gather information about user's program needs, to explain and train others in the use of computers)
Written communication (e.g., to compose manuals that simplify technical information into a clear, concise, and user-friendly format)

Ability To:

Use a variety of software applications, both mainframe and PC (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, databases, etc.)
Read and comprehend technical written materials (e.g., software manuals, local area network information, etc.)
Develop and conduct presentations
Install computer hardware, software and peripheral equipment
Troubleshoot and maintain hardware, software and peripheral equipment
Lift 50 pounds

JOB SPECIFIC:

The job responsibilities include updating multiple computers using imaging software, troubleshooting and fixing issues with computer hardware/software, assisting students/faculty/staff with technical issues. 

Seeking individuals with knowledge and experience with Microsoft Windows operating system, Microsoft Office products, computer repair/upgrade, computer troubleshooting, Google suite, and reading/updating technical documents and ticketing systems. 

Applicants must be able to work with people with varying technical skill levels and be able/willing to learn new technologies.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Computer lab environment; requires frequent use of video display terminal and light physical effort including occasional lifting up to 50 pounds (e.g., printer).

Working Schedule:

Part-time, schedule will be determined by the department. Hours will vary depending on departmental needs.
