Basic Function:

Provides strategic thought leadership, develops results-driven plans and establishes actionable objectives to develop cohesive, targeted marketing strategies for Kent State University. Directs marketing strategy teams in the development and execution of short and long term plans designed to elevate the perception, reputation and national standing of the university.  This position leads initiatives designed to increase enrollment and retention, engage alumni participation and giving, and inspires advocacy of the university among a variety of constituencies. This position requires a creative, goal-oriented professional skilled in managing digital marketing campaigns, developing innovative ideas and performing market research/analysis.  Reports to Senior Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Affairs.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Lead the Marketing Strategy team in creating innovative and distinctive strategic plans and initiatives that advance the university’s priorities and achieve marketing goals.

Participate as a member of the University Relations leadership team, collaborating fully with University Relations leadership to seize opportunities and tackle challenges to grow enrollment; enhance revenues and philanthropic support; and elevate KSU's national profile and reputation.

Ensure marketing strategy goals and initiatives align with priority efforts in President’s Office and Division of University Relations.

Serve division as a thought leader in higher education marketing.

Drive the ideation of forward thinking, creative opportunities to advance the university and incorporate these opportunities into actionable plans.

Develop integrated internal and external marketing/communications strategies focused on desired outcomes from key audiences.

Develop digital campaigns that drive web traffic and increase engagement.

Create actionable insight and understanding, through the analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data, and build recommendations that increase effectiveness of marketing initiatives.

Collaborate with Institutional Research and other sources to gather data, establish metrics and analyze trends for current and future initiatives.

Partner with divisions and campuses to create comprehensive and integrated strategic plans that advance university-wide priorities and goals.

Supervise directors of strategy, project managers and marketing research efforts.

Develop and manage resource allocations to support marketing initiatives that consistently fall within budget and achieve stated goals.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor degree in marketing, communications, journalism, public relations or related field.  Ten years of experience in a marketing and communications environment in relevant public or private sectors, preferably higher education.

License/Certification:

 

Knowledge Of:

Marketing research and data analysis, as well as its integral role in marketing communications strategy and new program development *
Different types of media, advertising tactics, and digital platforms for integration into strategic plans *
Relevant computer applications, including Microsoft Suite and project management systems
Understanding of higher education and the mission critical institutional processes including student acquisition and retention, service delivery, and stakeholder communications *
Budgeting and strategic planning *
Marketing campaigns, advertising, brand strategy *
Data management best practices *

Skill In:

Written and verbal communication, including presentations to senior audiences
Leading and motivating high performing teams
Engaging and communicating highly complex issues relevant to higher education
Current and emerging communications technologies and social media platforms
Utilizing data to measure, predict and support strategic initiatives
Project management and system implementation *

Ability To:

Think strategically and help shape branded, integrated marketing campaigns *
Lead in a highly skilled team environment where each project must be accurate, timely, and on budget *
Work well under pressure, be a creative problem solver, manage multiple requests and priorities, and prioritize the team’s workflow based on a constantly changing, fast-paced environment *
Function extremely well within a collaborative, team-oriented environment *
Provide leadership and direction and manage people and projects *
Multi-task while managing multiple projects and assignments *
Develop and coordinate innovative short and long-range strategic plans
Interact and communicate with high level university officials *
Maintain a strong working knowledge of competitors' marketing efforts and overall market dynamics and trends

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Master's degree in a relevant field.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.  Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. May require frequent travel on and off-campus.
