Basic Function:

Oversee all content initiatives, both internal and external, across multiple platforms and formats to drive constituent engagement, student/faculty/staff recruitment/retention, advocacy and philanthropic support for the university.   The position collaborates with staff leaders in public/media relations, strategic communications, marketing, enrollment management, IT and advancement/alumni relations to identify and share compelling stories that engage others and elevate brand awareness and affinity. This position will consistently focus on the content interests of constituents to assure customer engagement and a positive customer/user experience.  Reports to Senior Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Affairs.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Ensure all content is on-brand, consistent in terms of style, quality and tone of voice, and optimized for search and user experience for all channels of content including online, social media, email, point of purchase, mobile, video, print and in-person.

Develop and map out a content strategy that supports and extends marketing initiatives, both short- and long-term, determining which methods work best for various initiatives/campaigns. Continuous evolvement of strategy is required.

Develop a functional content calendar throughout the university, and define owners of each communications channel and specific persona groups.

Supervise writers, editors, content strategists; serve as an arbiter of best practices in storytelling, strategic messaging, writing, grammar and style.

Integrate strategic content activities within all university marketing campaigns.

Conduct ongoing usability tests to gauge content effectiveness and user experience; gather data and manage analytics (or supervise those who do) and make recommendations to improve effectiveness based on those results; work with owners of particular content to revise and measure content and marketing goals.

Develop standards, systems and best practices for content creation, distribution, maintenance, content retrieval and content repurposing, including the real-time implementation of content strategies.

Leverage market data to develop content themes/topics and execute plans that support university differentiation and constituent education.

Work with technical team to implement appropriate Content Management Systems (CMS).

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, public relations or related communications field.  Ten years of experience in multichannel content creation (publishing, journalism, etc.) including experience with creating compelling messages for different target demographics.  Expertise in major business software applications (Adobe, Microsoft Office, etc.).

License/Certification:

 

Knowledge Of:

Familiarity with principles of marketing *
Web publishing tools and fluency in web analytics tools, social media marketing applications and social media monitoring platforms *

Skill In:

Written and interpersonal communication, including editing and command of the English language, long-form content creation and real-time (immediate) content creation and distribution strategies and tactics
Articulating the business goal behind the creation of a piece (or series) of content
Leadership required to define and manage a set of goals involving diverse contributors and content types
Project management to manage editorial schedules and deadlines
Negotiation and mediation

Ability To:

Provide leadership and direction and manage people and projects
Demonstrate expertise in content/storytelling and channel optimization, brand consistency, audience segmentation and localization, analytics and meaningful measurement *
Lead the development of dynamic content in all forms/platforms to drive student enrollment and constituent engagement *
Lead and inspire teams of creative personnel and content creators to achieve stated goals 
Think like an educator, intuitively understanding what the audience needs to know and how they want to consume it
Create a resource or library of content organized indicating SEO and version control *
Adapt strategies as required 

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Master's in Business Administration

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work – Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects.  Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. May require frequent travel on and off-campus.
