Recreation Assistant-INR (Outdoor Adventure)

Basic Function:

Organizes and oversees formal and informal recreation programs (e.g., aquatics, fitness training, etc.) for students, staff, and general public. Reports to Director of Intramurals and Campus Recreation or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Oversees recreation programs and activities; instructs participants in the use of equipment and safety procedures; provides assistance to participants as necessary.

Supervises, hires, schedules, trains, and evaluates student employees assisting with recreation programs and activities.

Coordinates maintenance of equipment and facilities; inspects equipment and facilities; may make minor repairs to equipment; notifies other departments and University personnel about maintenance needs; schedules vendors to perform maintenance as needed.

Plans, prepares, schedules, and publicizes formal and informal recreation programs (e.g., aquatics, fitness training, etc.).

Assists in monitoring the budget; develops and modifies budget for student payroll; orders necessary equipment; may collect recreation program fees, etc.

May be required to teach American Red Cross First Aid and CPR.

Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. A minimum of one year of experience specific to recreation program (e.g., aquatics, fitness training, etc.).


Certification in American Red Cross First Aid and American Red Cross Community C.P.R. Designated positions may require additional certifications at the time of hire and/or successful completion of certification requirements during probationary period.

Knowledge Of:

Safety practices
Operation and maintenance of recreation equipment
Set up of equipment

Skill In:

Interpersonal communication to effectively interact with University personnel and public in person and over the telephone (e.g., to instruct participants, to transmit work directives, etc.)
Written communication (e.g., to compose brief memos, correspondence, promotional materials, etc.)

Ability To:

Read and follow instructions in written, oral, and pictorial form
Train and provide effective work direction to other employees
Manage time effectively and set priorities
Perform basic mathematics (e.g., add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, and to calculate percentages)
Maintain accurate records
Carry out or assist in implementing changes
Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds, if required by position

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Recreational environment (e.g., weight room, swimming pool area, etc.); may require moderate physical effort to include frequent walking, standing, and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds; may work varied hours and shifts to include evenings and weekends.
