$39,125 - $52,451 

Basic Function:

Provide leadership for all health information management services in support of the delivery of clinical and medical services. Plan, implement, organize, and monitor the collection, storage, and retrieval of health information. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of clinical coding and reporting. Oversee HIPAA compliance. Serve as the Custodian of Medical Records and the Privacy Coordinator. Reports to Director, University Health Services.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following: 

Provide managerial oversight for Health Information Management; interview and select staff; set expectations; monitor performance; provide feedback; identify training needs; balance workload among staff and design service area workflow.

Coordinate and conduct orientation and ongoing training for University Health Services employees in areas relevant to health information management.

Serve as the Privacy Coordinator:

  • Establish and maintain programs to protect confidential data and business records from unauthorized access or release
  • Educate staff regarding confidentiality
  • Provide daily oversight of release of information functions
  • Certify record authenticity
  • Establish and maintain procedures for records retention

Monitor the accuracy of clinical coding; design and implement audit tools to monitor compliance with policies and procedures and coordinate coding improvement initiatives.

Oversee information systems and coordinate the review and assessment of information security in collaboration with the University Health Services Security Officer.

Direct the management functions of health information management and health application support; plan, coordinate, and implement electronic health record systems improvements; develop protocols for collection of patient information; design methods, forms, and processes to improve efficiency in the collection, use, and reporting of clinical information.

Provide direction to department and division leadership in the development of policies and procedures to address short and long-term strategies that address accreditation standards, university, state, and federal regulations; monitor trends and health information management; recommend performance improvements.

Serve on various department committees.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in health information management, business administration, or related field.  Four years of experience in health information management, to include two years of supervisory experience.

License/Certification:

Not applicable.

Knowledge Of:

HIPAA Privacy and Security requirements *
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Skill In:

Current procedural terminology *
Healthcare common procedure coding system
ICD-10
Electronic health information related systems and software
MS Office Suite and other computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheet, database and statistical programs *

Ability To:

Work effectively with diverse populations within a multi-disciplinary healthcare delivery setting.

Preferred Qualifications – if applicable:

Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT).

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  Incumbent must be able to communicate with others.  Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.
